Popeye's chicken sandwich is one of the greatest modern business phenomenons. For years, McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, and other leading brands have given up on innovation and instead lean on nostalgia to breathe life into stagnant menus and hide one dimensional cost-cutting strategies. These brands have all deprioritized the United States in favor of international markets. Dollar menus have been eliminated, consistency is now as rare as quality, and Americans have gotten used to getting the short end of the stick in fast food.
All these factors made the Popeyes chicken sandwich in 2019 a miracle in itself. The sandwich was so unexpectedly exceptional in quality and price that customers waited hours to experience the viral sensation. The sandwich was groundbreaking in demonstrating that even in a market as mature as fast food, businesses ultimately compete on merit and that customers will always reward innovation.
As we covered in the Burger King episode and Under Armour episode, private equity can have disastrous consequences on businesses. Yet the Popeyes chicken sandwich came from the same private equity owners that had been running Burger King into the ground. As many as 1 in 3 Americans eats fast food at least once a day and most of those fast food meals include fried foods.
Research has linked higher consumption of fried foods to Type 2 diabetes and heart problems, but studies also show eating fried foods everyday could shorten your life.
Dr. Stephen Kopecky, a Mayo Clinic cardiologist, says our bodies simply did not evolve to know how to process fried foods.

Recently, a Chinese media outlet, The Beijing News, revealed a severe problem in China's cooking oil industry. Tanker trucks that transport chemical products like coal-derived oil are not cleaned before transporting cooking oil. This bulk cooking oil is then packaged as various brand-name oils and ends up on people's tables.
Some people even exposed a truck labeled as a water delivery vehicle, but when the label was removed, it turned out to be a sewage truck. Allegedly, this truck was delivering drinking water. This caused an uproar online. One person commented, "Mixing oils is bad enough, but mixing water with sewage? That's just disgusting! No matter how clean a toilet is, it can't be used as a kitchen!"

26 yrs old: In desperation, started licensing model as a hail mary. It worked.
27 yrs old: "Gym Launch" does $3M profit the next 6 months. Then $17M profit next 12 months.
28 yrs old: Started Prestige Labs. $20M the first year.
29 yrs old: Launched ALAN, a software company for agencies to work leads for customers. Scaled to $1.7mmo within 6 months.
31 yrs old: Sold 75% of UseAlan to a strategic buyer in an all stock deal.
31 yrs old: Sold 66% of Gym Launch & Prestige Labs at $46.2M valuation in all-cash deal to American Pacific Group. (you can google it)
31 yrs old: Started our family office Acquisition.com. We invest and scale companies using the $42M in distributions we had taken + the cash from the $46.2M exit.
32 yrs old: Started making free content showing how we grow companies to make real business education accessible to everyone (and) to attract business owners to invest or scale their businesses.
34 yrs old: I became co-owner of https://Skool.com to help the many people who want to start a business online do so.
Today: Our portfolio now does $200M/yr between 10 companies. The largest doing $100M/yr the smallest doing $5M per year. Our ownership varies between 20% and 100% ownership of the companies. Many of them we invested in early and helped grow (which is how we make our money - not youtube videos).
To all the gladiators in the arena, we’re all in the middle of writing our own stories. The worse the monsters, the more epic the story.
